I was commissioned (along with Brook Linder) to direct the lyric video for Beck’s latest single “Dear Life”
Beck wanted the lyric video to be very much influenced by the artwork I created for the album, hence all the geometric shapes and globular liquid forms.
I also didn’t want to just repeat the analog feel we created for the “WOW” video so we went for clean, simple type over widescreen cinematic scenes (shot in and around LA) juxtaposed with macro shots of paint and slime in a cloud tank.
Beck described the song himself as “about the turmoil of being alive. Like, can somebody throw me a lifeline here?”. Or as Marc Hogan at Pitchfork writes “Leave it to Beck to craft a sunny, upbeat pop song that doubles as a scream into the void”
